Architecture of Disaster - Design & Research Publications

This Cornell undergraduate studio led by Pritzker prize winning humanitarian Shigeru Ban and Dean Maltz investigated architectural responses to natural disaster, exploring how buildings can be instruments of suffering and loss of life, and conversely, how buildings can save lives. Students researched how buildings affect people in the face of trauma due to earthquake, tsunami, and hurricane, investigating factors like site specific constraints, international vs. domestic aid, and rates of recovery.  Following case study research, students made their own proposals for immediate, temporary, or permanent housing solutions.

The studio's collective work was collated into two publications:

Juanita served as teaching associate for Shigeru Ban and Dean Maltz over the course of the semester, and also did book layout for the studio's two publications.
